Business description

Springer SBM is a leading publisher of academic journals and books, formed through the merger of Kluwer Academic Publishing and Bertelsman Springer. Springer's six main publishing fields are: science, medicine, business, technology, architecture, and transport. The company owns around 60 publishing houses across 20 countries in Europe, Asia and the US. Springer publishes over 1,700 journals and more than 5,500 new book titles every year, with a backlist of more than 40,000 titles. Springer's eBook Collection has more than 27,000 titles, which are available at www.springerlink.com

Cinven strategy

Cinven's strategy for the merger that created Springer was to build a leading scientific, technical and medical (STM) publishing group and to develop its business-to-business publishing operations. Cinven recruited a new, very experienced management team at the outset and refined the merger plan with the team. The post-merger plan included both margin improvement and the exploitation of economies of scale in marketing and purchasing to grow the business faster than the market.

Cinven realised its investment in Springer when the business was sold in February 2010.
